The majority of mantis species in the world today are not shy of going for big kills. They can easily detect prey and will go hunt it, irrespective of its size. They are renowned for holding their own against prey larger than itself, even though it has no venom! The praying mantis attacks its prey and holds it down through pure force.
They don’t paralyze their prey, instead holding them still, overpowering them and eating them as it is. There is lots of praying mantis that go around hunting hummingbirds, spiders, lizards, mice, and even other mantis! However, it is only the larger species of praying mantis that go about doing this, which include the Budwing Mantis, African Mantis, Chinese Mantis, and Asian Mantis.
